Toothache is the most common reason for most people to go and visit a dentist. Lack/Improper Oral hygiene is the main reason why many are suffering from this pain. The study shows that men generally give less importance to oral hygiene and come only to a dentist when they experience oral problems such as toothache, unlike women who are very conscious with their oral health.
There are several reasons for a toothache, but tooth decay is the most common. Aside from that the following also are the primary cause of having a toothache:
- Infected Gums
- Damaged Filling
- Fractured Teeth
- Grinding Teeth
These are the culprit in making your tooth ache or experience pain.
You know when you have toothache when you feel a sharp and throbbing pain in your tooth. Sometimes when you apply pressure on it, it results to pain. Others feel the pain when there is swelling around the tooth. Or you suddenly have a fever or headache because of the pain.
How will I know if I need to see a dentist because of a toothache?
If you have a toothache that last for a day or two, when the pain is severe, you have a fever or earache, or when it is painful when you open your mouth, you should see a dentist immediately. Do not ignore the pain; it may lead to serious tooth problems. Your dentist will diagnose the source of your toothache; see if there is particles or infection that causes the pain, or if it needs to be uprooted/extracted because of the decay. Sometimes, an x-ray will be required to see if the cause is inside your tooth. Make sure to tell your dentist your dental history, so that he/she can assess you properly. He/she will ask related stuff about your toothache and will conduct a physical exam of your tooth.
How can I Prevent Toothache?
Good Oral Hygiene is the primary key in preventing toothache. It consists of brushing teeth regularly (at least twice a day) with fluoride containing toothpaste and flossing at least once a day. Avoid eating foods that are rich in sugar. And visit your dentist as often as possible for regular checkup and cleaning.
